Southgate Answers on Trippier Injury and Praises Guehi’s Performance
Kieran Trippier Injury Scare
Gareth Southgate has assured fans that Kieran Trippier only suffered from a cramp during England’s 1-0 win over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener. Trippier went down in the second half raising concerns about a possible injury. However, Southgate confirmed the issue was minor.
“Kieran was just cramp. As far as I know, everyone has come through well,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live. This news is a relief, especially with Luke Shaw still not fully fit. England’s next match is against Denmark on Thursday.
Guehi Impresses on Debut
Marc Guehi earned high praise for his performance in his major tournament debut. The Crystal Palace defender played a crucial role in England’s win and impressed Southgate.
“Really pleased for him,” Southgate said.
“I saw the player I have seen every week for his club. Positionally, he was sound. Today was going to be a particular test in terms of his stature as he’s not the biggest centre-back, but he dealt with the aerial threat really well.”
Guehi was happy with his performance but credited his teammates for their support.
“I enjoyed it a lot. It was a great atmosphere, and I am just grateful to play with such experienced players,” he told UEFA.com.
“They make it easier for me to play in my position and they help me and the team. It is more of a team performance and I am just glad to have top professionals around me.”
Reflecting on the match, Guehi added,
“If we are going to go far in this tournament, we are going to have to suffer, and it was a great test for us. It is a good learning curve for the team and hopefully, we can take it on to the next game.”
