Born in Huizen, Netherlands to parents of Moroccan-Riffian descent, Amrabat’s father Mohammed Amrabat was of Morrocan descent which made him join the Moroccan national team growing up. His brother Nordin Amrabat is another popular professional footballer known for his intensive skills. Being nine years older than Sofyan, Nordin also spent his early years in Huizen, Netherlands.

Despite being each other’s lookalike, the two brothers are not twins and have a nine-year difference. Nordin has been an inspiration for Sofyan since childhood as the two brothers have developed a love for the sport together. Growing up in a Dutch footballing environment, Sofyan developed a deep connection with the game and got the support he needed from his family during this time.

Sofyan started his footballing career from Utrecht after joining their youth academy. Making his debut for the club on November 2, 2014, Sofyan’s intentions were clear as he handled the game commendably and easily. After electrifying the footballing world with his presence, Amrabat decided to move to Feyenoord back in 2017 to explore further options.

His deal was a four-year deal with a total transfer fee of €4 million. In his 33 appearances for the club, Amrabat displayed extensive midfield control and decision-making capabilities which attracted a lot of scouts. Scouts from Belgium surely had something big planned for him which ultimately saw him shifting to Belgian Pro League.

2018 saw Amrabat shifting to Belgian club Club Brugge with another four-year deal with a transfer fee of  €2.5 million. He was then sent on loan to Hellas Verona in August of 2019 giving him a very short period of time with Club Brugge.

Being born and brought up in Netherlands and born to Morrocan descent parents, Amrabat was eligible to play for both the nations at the international level. After making four appearances for the Dutch at U-15 level, Amrabat shifted his focus to Morocco international football team.

He was selected in the U-17 National team for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and further made three appearances in the tournament. He made his senior debut for the national team in 2017 and also attended the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
