Shakhtar Donetsk 1-5 Bayern Munich Player Ratings as the Bavarian giants record their first away win in stellar fashion

In what was a big game for their respective futures in the Champions League, Shakhtar Donetsk hosted the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on home soil. Whilst the Ukranian outfit came in looking to escape the elimination spots, Bayern hoped to make a case for themselves to break into the Top 8 and secure a direct spot in the Round of 16. 

With that said, Shakhtar was quick to set the pace, biding their time for an early counter-attack which yielded them the opening goal within the first 5 minutes. However, Bayern, who had mounted tremendous pressure on the home side since the first whistle managed to whittle down the lead as Konrad Laimer quickly snatched the equaliser. Despite a close shave, Bayern then went on to add a second before the break. The second half saw Bayern claim a rather fortunate penalty, before adding two more goals which helped them put the game beyond all doubt and secure all three points.

All in all the game made for an entertaining watch with the Bayern attackers putting on a real show of quality and skill whilst the Shakhtar side did their best to soak up the pressure and hit back on the counter. However, the side with more quality prevailed on the night and cruised to victory.

Goalkeeper

Dmytro Riznyk: 6.5/10- Had a very busy evening with all the attempts from the Bayern side. Gave a solid account for himself despite the scoreline and couldn’t really have prevented any of the goals. 

Defenders

Mykola Matviyenko: 6/10- Had a torrid time on the left-hand side, constantly facing a lot of threat and often being troubled. Held on well on a few occasions but really needed more help on his side in the first half, which kept the attackers much reserved.

Alaa Ghram: 6/10- Despite the waves of pressure coupled with superb quality, he managed to hold his nerve and stuck in with a few solid tackles to avert any major development or immediate danger. 

Valeriy Bondar: 6.5/10- Defended valiantly in the first half and despite struggling throughout big spells, put in a respectable shift. Nearly got among the goals with a near miss from a corner early on in the second half. 

Yukhym Konoplia: 5.5/10- Struggled massively in terms of keeping up with Sane and with the ball at his feet. Had to be bailed out by a teammate at times and was dealt with on occasion. Did well to clear out a few high crosses with his head though. 

Midfielders

Marlon Gomes: 6/10- Despite all his hard work defensively, ended up surrendering possession far too often and way too easily which eventually saw his side pegged behind after a direct error.

Artem Bondarenko: 6.5/10- Massively struggled especially with having to drop deep and defend more often. Was handily dealt with by the Bayern attackers on occasion and could not really offer much moving forward for his side.

Georgiy Sudakov: 6.5/10- Played much deeper than usual owing to the pressure from Bayern. Did well to get stuck in for the most part and also had the legs to get further up for the counter-attacks. Squandered an easy chance in the first half, which would have given his side the advantage.

Attackers

Kevin: 7/10- Secured the opening goal for his side with a well-timed run and equally well-placed shot to find the far bottom corner with his curling effort. Had to get past his man and did so quite effortlessly in that instance. Spent the rest of his time getting stuck in and helping out the defense.

Oleksandr Zubkov: 6.5/10- Was a key man for the side during offensive transitions and did well to find the assist early on in the game. Struggled to have as much impact as the game went on. 

Danylo Sikan: 6.5/10- Struggled especially considering the game plan that had been set up for the game. Despite his lack of presence during offensive transitions, he often dropped back aiding the defense with a few tackles.

Marino Pušić: 6.5/110- Set his side up well and was quite pragmatic with his changes. They should have come up with a better solution in the second half, which saw the game slip from their grasp.

Bayern Munich Player Ratings vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Goalkeeper

Daniel Peretz: 6/10- Did not have much to do barring the occasional counterattack. Did not look ready to deal with them on either occasion and was lucky not to ship more goals than he did.

Defenders

Konrad Laimer: 7.5/10- Was very willing and energetic in moving up the field. Was surprisingly a big attacking threat, opting to move into the box more often than floating in crosses. 

Dayot Upamecano: 6.5/10- Very dominant in some of his tackles and interceptions, but often left a lot of space in behind. Did well to venture forward at times but once again left a lot of uncertainty with his defensive prowess. 

Min-Jae Kim: 6.5/10- Comfortable and progressive when in possession but looked much worse with his defending. Significant improvements were made in the second half, and a vital block was made as well.

Raphaël Guerreiro: 7/10- Showed great energy in getting up the field and was a useful outlet for the Bayern attack. Did not have to defend too much and was happy to bomb forward whenever he got the chance.

Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich: 7/10- Solid as per with his distribution of the ball and tempo of the game. Made things look quite effortless on occasion and all in all a good performance him on the night. 

Leon Goretzka: 7/10- Grew into the game come the second half and really began imposing himself when he would pick the ball up and march through the midfield. Did get stuck in with tackles and interceptions on the flip side as well.

Jamal Musiala: 8/10- At times unplayable on the night due to his dazzling dribbling and ability to link play. Was thoroughly involved in every attack and managed to notch up a goal and assist as well. 

Attackers

Michael Olise: 8.5/10- Standout player on the night, with every aspect of his game. Made light work of the entire Shakhtar backline with his second goal which was well deserving of the standing ovation it got.

Leroy Sane: 7/10- Absolutely terrorized the Shakhtar defense at times and at times looked like he did not need any help from his teammates. Lacked a little bit in the output department and was slightly shot-shy on the night.

Thomas Müller: 7.5/10- Led the line well and was up to his usual antics which saw him nab Bayern’s second goal. Showed great leadership with his work ethic in defense as well when he kept out a dangerous attempt from a corner.

Vincent Kompany: 7.5/10- Did well to recognize the opposition’s tendencies and made suitable adjustments for them. Was very quick to adapt in the second half which saw his team make the scoreline much more comfortable.
