Sevilla Sack Garcia Pimienta and Appoint Joaquin Caparros as Interim Head Coach
Sevilla have confirmed that they have parted ways with head coach Garcia Pimienta. This comes on the backdrop of their 1-0 loss to Valencia in the recent La Liga game, which left them in 14th place in the league with only 36 points acquired from 31 games in the 2024/25 La Liga campaign. They have also brought back former head coach Joaquin Caparros in an interim head coach role until the end of the ongoing season.
In an official statement confirming his departure, the club stated: “Xavier García Pimienta has been dismissed from his position as Sevilla FC manager. The club has informed the Blanquirrojos that he will step down from his position as manager of the Nervion team after 31 league matches. Sevilla FC wishes to express its gratitude for García Pimienta’s work over the past few months, as well as his professionalism, and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Sevilla under Garcia Pimienta
Sevilla have endured a frustrating 2024/25 season, and it’s clear that Pimienta has had to bear the majority of the blame for that. The 51-year-old manager was appointed as the club’s head coach at the beginning of the campaign, but failed to get them performing at the highest level since his arrival.
Los Hispalenses have had their share of troubles in the ongoing La Liga campaign. They have won just nine of their 31 league games so far in this campaign, having lost more games (13) than the number they’ve managed to win. They have lost their last four straight La Liga matches, causing the club’s management to take strict action.
Sevilla were also knocked out of the Copa Del Rey in the Round of 32 edition by second-division side Almeria. Pimienta was able to manage 34 matches as Sevilla manager in the 2024/25 season, out of which they only won on 11 occasions, which leaves him with a poor 32.35% win rate after his departure from the club.
About Joaquin Caparros
Joaquin Caparros has worked in a managerial role for Sevilla in multiple different stints. His first period as a coach for the club was from 2000-2005, and he was actually responsible for helping them win the 2000/01 Segunda Division title and get them promoted to La Liga. He managed over 220 matches in his first stint with them, helping them win 102 matches.
Caparros has a pretty solid record when it comes to helping Sevilla in a caretaker manager role. He was appointed as their caretaker manager in the 2017/18 season, helping them win three of the four matches in charge.
Sevilla brought him back in that role once again at the end of the 2019/20 season, during which he managed 11 games and helped the club win six of them. The Spaniard is expected to be replaced after the end of the 2024/25 season again, but will aim to help Sevilla make a push for a top-10 finish at the end of the La Liga campaign.
