Sergio Gomez edging closer to Real Sociedad move

The Manchester City defender has reportedly agreed to join Real Sociedad in a €9 million deal after two unsuccessful years at the Etihad Stadium. Gomez was signed in the 2022 summer transfer window from Anderlecht in a deal worth £11m.

But Gomez has featured only 39 games across all competitions and started only 14 of those over the past two seasons. The Spaniard ended up making only 15 appearances in all competitions last season.

The 23-year-old left-back has struggled to hold down a starting place at the Etihad and did not start a single Premier League game for the Cityzens last year. He wants to play regularly but would never realise his full potential under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage.

The Barcelona academy graduate now has an agreement in place with Spanish giants Real Sociedad who are willing to offer a €9 million package for the outcasted defender with a 15% sell-on clause with Man City as well as a buy-back clause for the Spanish defender

Transfer Fabrizio Romano confirmed Sergio Gomez’s departure one month earlier

Gomez was never a first-choice option for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and he would be eager to revive his career at Real Sociedad. The Cityzens are taking an initial hit on the Spaniard but have managed to include a 15% sell-on clause in the deal.

Transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano already the defender’s departure back in June.

He said: “EXCL: Real Sociedad open talks to sign left-back Sergio Gomez from Man City, initial negotiations taking place.

“Gomez, expected to leave Man City this summer and Real Sociedad are looking for Kieran Tierney replacement.”

Sergio Gomez will be the third player to leave Eithad this summer window, after academy graduates Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis secured their permanent departures in June.
