Sergio Canales explains what sets Lionel Messi apart from everyone else
Over the last two decades, few players have managed to keep pace with Lionel Messi as only Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to go toe to toe with the Argentine. But even then, Messi has outpaced Ronaldo at times, with the now 36-year-old winning eight Ballon d’Ors in the process. That doesn’t include the numerous league titles and Champions League trophies in Messi’s trophy cabinet.
His move to Inter Miami has seen the Argentine thrive a lot more as the 36-year-old has become an integral part of the MLS squad, as they continue to challenge for a trophy. However, at the age of 36, only Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming close to boasting a similar level of consistency. But with Messi’s career coming to an end, it has many wondering just how many years the forward has left although his showcase in the MLS has dissuaded any doubters.
Canales believes that Lionel Messi is the best of all time
It has seen the Argentine constantly praised by nearly every player and critic in the world, and Sergio Canales is the latest to add to that. The former Real Madrid and Real Betis star believes that in his eyes, Lionel Messi is the best to ever play football. Not only that, Canales, who now plays for Mexican side Monterrey, admitted that only Ronaldo comes close to what Messi has achieved.
“What sets him (Lionel Messi) apart from all other players – with the exception of Cristiano Ronaldo – is that it’s virtually impossible to stay at that level for 15 or 20 years. They’re the only two players who have managed to maintain that level for that long, winning title after title and contending to be the best every year with goals, assists and by leading their teams to silverware,” Canales told FIFA’s official website.
“The composure and personality exuded by players like them goes beyond mere technical and physical attributes. You just know they’re going to be there when you need them, and that gives their team-mates peace of mind. That’s why I consider Messi to be the best of all time. To be able to maintain that level and desire for 15 years is impossible!”
