Ruben Amorim calls up academy talent Godwill Kukonki to his first trainng session

Premier League giants Manchester United’s newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim conducted his first-ever training session as Red Devil boss at Carrington on Monday. Interestingly, Amorim included the 16-year-old rising youth prospect Godwill Kukonki, who has been making his name with United’s under-18 side and attended his maiden senior team training session under Amorim.

Kukonki is being viewed as a potential solution to IENOS’ long hunt for a natural left-footed centre-back, left-footed central defenders have become key figures in modern-day football. In the summer, United tried to rope in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite to fill that role in the back line. At just the age of 16, the bright talent has gained successive promotions from the Under-16 side to the Under-21.

He is a regular start for clubs’ Under-18 teams playing the commanding role of a central defender, the teenager is equipped with brilliant technicality, is physically strong standing tall at 6’5 feet in height, exceptional in decision-making and sharp in ball-playing quality makes him stand out name in Manchester United youth team.

Naturally, Godwill Kukonki is a left-footed centre-back who can easily slot into multiple positions in the back line such as the Left-back. The teenager has started all the Under-18 Premier League matches for United in which he has been the part of squad except single game. Amorim is renowned for counting on young talents emerging from the academy is among the factors that brought during his time at Sporting Lisbon.

When is Ruben Amorim’s first match as United boss?

The 39-year-old gaffer is one of the youngest and most exciting managers in football right now, having officially taken charge of the Red Devils on November 11, as Interim manager Rudd Van Nisterlooy handed the charge of the club to the Portuguese manager. Amorim has already completed his first training session with the available players today, meanwhile, the rest of the players are expected to return in the coming days from national team commitments.

Later, the Red Devils will host the Norwegian outfit FK Bodø/Glimt during midweek in the UEFA Europa League fixture outing at Old Trafford which will be Amorim’s first home match as United head coach.
