This made it the second-highest bid, slightly less than Reliance Industries’ US $111.9 million bid for the Mumbai Indians. Ahead of the 2008 player auction, the IPL named Rahul Dravid the Bangalore franchise’s marquee player. The squad struggled in its first season, winning only four of 14 games, and finished seventh in the eight-team standings.

In the following season despite starting poorly they secured a place in the final eventually falling short against Deccan Chargers. Then in 2010 secured seven wins from 14 matches, acquiring 14 points. Next season they secured the service of Chris Gayle as a replacement. His inclusion led RCB to a seven-match winning streak.

They lost the final, again to the Super Kings, by 58 runs. Chris Gayle was named Man of the Tournament. RCB advanced to the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 semi-finals after becoming runner-up in the IPL. They won their final group match against the Southern Redbacks on the last ball before defeating the New South Wales Blues in the semi-finals. However, losing the final to the Mumbai Indians.

Amrit Thomas took over as chairman of the Royal Challengers following financial scandals involving owner and chairman Vijay Mallya. In the 2016 season, RCB ended the group stage in second place in the points table, with 16 points. They defeated Gujarat Lions by four wickets in Qualifier 1 at their home venue. To qualify for their third final in nine seasons. In the final versus Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bangalore, RCB fell short by eight runs.
