Why was Ronaldo Araujo sent off in the Barcelona vs PSG clash?
A Ronald Araujo red card cost FC Barcelona heavily as the Spanish side fell to a crushing defeat to PSG in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
Ronald Araujo Red Card: What happened?
After beating PSG comfortably at Parc des Princes last week, FC Barcelona hosted the Parisian club at home with a one goal lead. To make matters worse for PSG, La Blaugrana scored the first goal in the 2nd leg tie as well making the score 1-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate in Barca’s favor. However, a Ronald Araujo red card changed the entire course of the game.
Just as it seemed that Barcelona were cruising towards a UCL semifinal, a fantastic through ball from the PSG backline caught the Barcelona defense unaware, leaving PSG winger Bradley Barcola through on goal with acres of space ahead. In an attempt to catch up with the winger, Ronald Araujo caught Barcola from behind on the cusp of FC Barcelona’s box. The obvious foul on the edge of the box and Araujo being the last man led to the referee ultimately showing the Uruguayan a red card, reducing La Blaugrana to 10 men.
The Ronaldo Araujo red card went on to cost the 10 man Barcelona heavily as the club struggled to defend and eventually were overwhelmed by the pressure exerted by the Luis Enrique coached PSG side. A brace by Kylian Mbappe and two beautiful goals by Vitiniha and Dembele sealed the game for PSG. The match ended in a comfortable 1-4 victory in PSG’s favor and will see the Parisian club play a UCL semifinal against Borussia Dortmund.
Will FC Barcelona’s Ronaldo Araujo play in El Clasico?
Despite a heartbreaking exit from the UEFA Champions League, FC Barcelona will not have much time to mourn as they are set to host Real Madrid in LaLiga on Sunday. El Clasico will serve as the last chance for Barcelona to reduce the point gap between the two sides in LaLiga this season and will need to arrive on Sunday with intent and a fit squad.
However, many fans are worried that the Ronald Araujo red card will disallow the key defender from participating in the El Clasico scheduled for Sunday. It is important to note that red cards picked up in European competitions such as UCL and UEL do not carry over to the domestic league. Due to this rule, the Ronald Araujo red card will not affect his participation and the defender will be available for selection for Barcelona against Real Madrid. The Uruguayan is also likely to start in the last El Clasico of the season!
