In a disturbing incident ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion‘s Europa League clash vs AS Roma, two Brighton fans were stabbed in Rome on Wednesday night.

Safety Concern for Brighton Fans

The victims, aged 27 and 28, were also subjected to robbery during the attack but managed to seek refuge in a nearby restaurant, where an employee promptly alerted emergency services.

Both individuals were subsequently transported to the hospital, with their injuries reported as non-life-threatening.

Sussex Police confirmed the presence of their dedicated football officer PC Darren Balkham in Rome to collaborate with Italian authorities and European partner agencies in response to the incident.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the assault occurred in Rome’s Monti district, where the victims were attacked and stabbed in the thighs by a masked gang of approximately seven individuals before being robbed.

The Foreign Office has acknowledged the incident, stating that they are providing assistance to the affected British citizens and liaising with local authorities.

The unfortunate occurrence casts a shadow over the anticipated Europa League clash, with around 3,500 Brighton supporters having travelled to Rome for the first leg of the last-16 tie.

Fans Advised to Utilize a Free Shuttle Service for Brighton vs Roma Match

Concerns over street crime were raised by the club beforehand, urging fans to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Brighton fans attending the match have been advised to utilize a free shuttle service for transportation to and from the Stadio Olimpico, emphasizing safety measures amidst the heightened security concerns.

This incident echoes a similar episode earlier in the season when a Newcastle United fan sustained stab wounds in Milan ahead of a Champions League fixture against AC Milan.

The safety and security of fans travelling for football matches continue to be a matter of concern, underscoring the importance of vigilant measures and coordinated efforts to ensure the well-being of supporters.
