Rodri tops ESPN best midfielders list with Martin Odegaard and Toni Kroos behind him
Ever since he signed for Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, few players have thrived as much as Rodri has for the Manchester giants. The now 27-year-old has evolved and grown in his spell at the club and is now considered to be one of the best in the game. So much so, that City gave him a contract extension just three years after he signed, extending till the summer of 2027.
That combined with the Spaniard’s availability has meant that City has rarely been without their defensive star with Rodri playing over 250 games for the club. That includes 50 games this season with the midfielder missing just four league games. Not only that, Rodri also hit a career high for goals and assists, contributing to 23 across all competitions.
Rodri tops ESPN best midfielders list with Martin Odegaard in third place
So much so, that the Spaniard has topped ESPN’s list for the best midfielders in world football, with Rodri ahead of both second place Jude Bellingham and third place Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian isn’t the only Arsenal player on the list as both Kai Havertz (11) and Declan Rice (5) make the cut.
Not only that, James Maddison (30), Bruno Fernandes (10), Kevin De Bruyne (10), Bruno Guimaraes (17) and a few others make the cut from the Premier League. But while the Premier League have the most in ESPN’s top ten, the La Liga comes a close second with four players making the cut for the top ten.
That includes Bellingham (2), Toni Kroos (4), Aurelien Tchouameni (7) and Pedri (8) with Florian Writz (6) the only Bundesliga player in the top ten. He is, however, joined by Granit Xhaka (24), Jamal Musiala (12), Joshua Kimmich (15), Xavi Simmons (16) and a few others inside the top 30.
