Spain stars Rodri and Morata charged by UEFA after provocative Gibraltar chants

UEFA has charged Euro 2024 winners Rodri and Alvaro Morata after they were seen singing about a sovereignty claim on Gibraltar following their 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 finals. Rodri was named Player of the Tournament after playing an instrumental role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

Both players were seen chanting “Gibraltar es Espanol” which translates to “Gibraltar is Spanish” during Spain’s celebration in Madrid last week which led to a complaint from the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA).

Gibraltar which is a British territory located in the Southern tip of Spain was the focal point of the chant. An ethics and disciplinary inspector (CEDB) was appointed to look into the matter and will decide on the incident in due course.

What has UEFA said about the incident?

After the Gibraltar Football Association filed a formal complaint to UEFA, the board said they will rule on the case at a later date and both players could face a two-match ban if UEFA opts to sanction the duo.

“In response to the incident, Gibraltar’s Football Association lodged a formal complaint with UEFA, prompting the appointment of an ethics and disciplinary inspector to determine if the chant violated any regulations,” the initial UEFA statement read.

The duo have violated the basic rules of ‘decent conduct’ and is yet to be disclosed what punishment both Rodri and Morata will be slammed with.
