Real Madrid vs Man City Preview

  • Tournament – Champions League
  • Date – Tuesday, April 9
  • Kick-off Time – 08:00 pm GMT
  • Venue – Santiago Bernabeu

The two European giants will battle out each other in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie on Tuesday, April 9. Man City will be looking to retain their European crown when they travel to Madrid for the last eight of the competition.

The nerve-wracking fixture has previously been contested 10 times with Real Madrid winning three, drawing three and losing four against the English giants. Despite Real Madrid boasting 14 Champions League titles, it is Manchester City who have the better head-to-head record. The Cityzens have the chance of repeating the historic treble at this stage of the season.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, easily possesses the firepower to punish Man City’s defence which has been leaking goals of late. They are on course to win their 36th league title this season and are unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions. Both sides will offer an exquisite amount of threat and it will be the third consecutive season where both sides meet in the knockout stages of the competition.

Real Madrid’s No.1 goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered a knee injury before the international break which will keep him out for the remainder of the campaign. David Alaba suffered an ACL injury back in December and will not play again this season. There should be no fresh injury concerns for Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian manager will be boosted with the return of Eder Militao bolstering his defensive options. Vinicius Junior who missed the La Liga encounter due to suspension will be eligible to play this Tuesday.

As for Man City, Nathan Ake (calf) and Kyle Walker (hamstring) are ruled out for the away clash. Defender Josko Gvardiol picked up a knock against Crystal Palace but the injury doesn’t look serious and could be a minor doubt for the first leg. First-team keeper Ederson might be available to start after recovering from his leg injury.

The Cityzens are certainly the heavy favorites coming into this fixture. They will enter this game off the back of an emphatic 4-2 win over Crystal Palace over the weekend. Pep Guardiola’s side have scored three goals in each of their eight Champions League matches so far. Even though City’s recent record against the Spanish giants have been superior, the hosts can never be counted out, especially on the European stage.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have won three and drawn two of their last five games. Carlo Ancelotti’s men are unbeaten in their last 13 games in all competitions. They got battered by Man City last season 5-1 on aggregate and they will be out for revenge after their humiliation in the last four a year ago.

Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Man City
