Real Betis 2-1 Real Madrid Player Ratings: Los Blancos Suffer a Defeat as Isco Scored the Winner Against His Former Club
Real Madrid, yet again dropped points in the La Liga title race after they conceded a 1-2 defeat against Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on Saturday. Knowing that a win would put them back in top place before Barcelona’s match against Real Sociedad on Sunday, but everything went to vain. Brahim Diaz scored the opener for the Los Blancos but it was Isco, who turned the tie around. Firstly, with his assist through a corner, where Johnny Cardoso found the net and then from the spot in the second half.
The initial phase of the game was very mediocre as the ball stayed on the midfield of the pitch. Around the 10th minute mark Kylian Mbappe cruised with the ball and picked up Ferland Mendy with a threading pass inside the box. Mendy on the run of the play played it back near the far post for Brahim Diaz to score the opener of the tie.
Just into the half-an hour mark, Real Betis levelled the score with midfielder Johnny Cardoso heading the ball home past Thibaut Courtois. After assisting the goal, Isco pulled the string in the middle of the park making things happen for the hosts. Around the end of the first half, Betis almost scored another one but Cardoso’s deflected headers was saved brilliantly by the Real Madrid goalkeeper. In Seville, the first half has been played at a fast pace in the rain with little space between the two teams.
Seven minutes into the second half, Betis forward Jesus Rodrigues was tumbled to the ground by Rudiger and the referee directly pointed to the spot for a penalty. Isco scored from the spot to make the score 2-1 as Betis strongly grew into the game after the break. The guy responsible for the Real Madrid backline’s problems is Antony. With Courtois nowhere in sight, the Manchester United loanee advances the ball and delightfully passes it to Cucho Hernandez, who can only deflect his attempt wide of the post.
During the final 15 minutes of the game, the Los Blanco had put their foot on the gas as substitute Endrick caused problems with some neat touches but was not able to salvage even a draw from the game. This defeat kept Real Madrid winless at the Benito Villamarin in the last three seasons.
