Manchester United Eyes Lyon’s Rayan Cherki Amidst Speculations of Managerial Changes
In a strategic move, Manchester United are reportedly considering a bid for 20-year-old Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki in 2024. Cherki, who emerged in Lyon’s first team at just 16, has garnered attention for his impressive performances, securing a spot as a regular starter for the seven-time Ligue 1 champions.
With 119 appearances, 14 goals, and 18 assists for Lyon’s senior squad, Cherki’s recent form has seen a decline, with only two assists in the current season amidst Lyon’s challenging start, placing them 15th in the league table. Despite this, the young Frenchman showcased his skills by assisting Alexandre Lacazette in Lyon’s recent 1-0 victory over Nantes.
Cherki’s contract with Lyon extends until 2025, but Manchester United, led by newly appointed minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, may be poised to make a move. Ratcliffe, also the owner of Lyon’s Ligue 1 rivals Nice, has expressed admiration for Cherki, potentially giving United an advantage in the pursuit.
Apart from Manchester United who are the other clubs interested in Rayan Cherki?
While Chelsea reportedly vetoed a move for Cherki over the summer due to attitude concerns, United are now in the race, competing against potential interest from West Ham United and Newcastle United. The arrival of Ratcliffe confirmed with his 25% purchase of Manchester United, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in accelerating the pursuit of Cherki.
Additionally, United’s Ligue 1 transfer wishlist includes Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo. However, Tottenham Hotspur are currently leading the race for Todibo, and Ratcliffe is unlikely to block the move if an appropriate offer is made.
As Manchester United faces challenges in the Premier League, sitting eighth in the table with eight losses this season, the club is considering strategic moves in the upcoming transfer window. While a new centre-forward is a priority, the club’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, has indicated that significant spending is unlikely in the January window. The Red Devils are gearing up for a Boxing Day clash against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
