Raphaël Guerreiro Injury: Will he play against Real Madrid in UCL?
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has revealed that Raphael Guerreiro will be out for their match against Real Madrid. The Portuguese star needed crutches to leave the stadium today and will not be fit in time for the UEFA Champions League semifinal second leg.
The defender had to be taken off after just 17 minutes in the loss to Stuttgart. He seems to have picked up a serious muscle injury, and Portugal will be hoping that he is not out for long, as the EUROs start in just over a month.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Eberl stated that it was almost impossible to have Guerreira for the second leg against Real Madrid. He said via Manuel Veth:
“It will be difficult for him to play against Real Madrid”
Thomas Tuchel confirms Raphaël Guerreiro injury
Thomas Tuchel also spoke to the media regarding the injury and confirmed that his defender was on crutches. He stated that the Portuguese star is cursed and it leaves a bitter taste for all.
The Bayern Munich manager added that it was the worst possible outcome from the game and said:
“Raphael Guerreiro needed crutches to walk. He’s cursed. He’s probably out of the return match for us. It is very, very bitter for us. He was supposed to get some playing time today to be ready for Wednesday. Instead, now we have to see what happens.”
He added:
“If there ever was a day when we needed to put this behind us quickly, then it is today, and we see what we need for Wednesday. The medical meetings at the moment are more maths than medical. Who is on 60 percent, who is on 30 percent, and who can’t play at all?
Bayern Munich also had to take out Eric Dier in the game as his head wounds reopened. They did not want to take more risks and took him off. Tuchel said on the injury situation:
“We had a meeting with the medical team before the game – they were like: ’60 minutes for this, 30 minutes for that, 60 minutes for that, this one can’t play at all’. Unfortunately, this has been the situation the whole season. Rapha Guerreiro was getting minutes to be ready for Wednesday and now he’s on crutches. Eric Dier felt a bit something in his thigh before the game, but that wasn’t the reason (he got subbed off) – it was due to the head knock. We couldn’t take any more risks with him. We then took a risk with Upa who wasn’t supposed to play for more than 30 minutes. This has unfortunately been the story of our season.”
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are level after the first leg at the Allianz Arena. The German side will travel to face the Spanish side on Wednesday.
