Premier League Explains VAR Decision on Calvert-Lewin Penalty Appeal in Everton vs Newcastle
The game between Newcastle United and Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday had a penalty debate where Everton appealed for a penalty after Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down inside the area after a challenge from Dan Burn, but VAR refused to intervene on the occasion. There were a lot of images that suggest that it should have been awarded a penalty, and experts believed that Everton were robbed.
The Premier League later, through their X handle named Premier League Match Centre, clarified why the call was made, reasoning that Calvert-Lewin made contact with Burn and not the other way around.
The tweet posted by the official account read, ‘The referee’s call for no penalty for the challenge between Calvert-Lewin and Burn is checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn’s leg.’
It was a disappointing match for both sides, as they had to settle for a point as both teams lacked quality in the final third. This draw extends Newcastle’s streak of without a win to three games in the Premier League. In the game, VAR had also overturned a goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure in the first 18 minutes of the game, stating that the VAR had checked for a potential offside, and it was evident from the replays.
The game ended in a draw after Antony Gordon, who left Goodison Park for Newcastle in 2023, had an opportunity to score a penalty, but Jordan Pickford guessed the right side and saved the toffees from a defeat. It earned Everton a fifth point from the last three games.
