Portuguese legend Pepe announces retirement at 41

Portugal defender Pepe has announced his retirement from football at 41, revealed journalist Fabrizio Romano on X. The former Real Madrid defender bid adieu to club and country after an illustrious career lasting 23 years. He was last seen at the Euro 2024 with the Selecao, who made it until the quarter-finals before their penalty shootout loss to France.

Having made his debut at Maritimo way back in 2001, Pepe has since represented Porto, Real Madrid, and Besiktas before returning to Porto again in 2019. That’s where he was associated for the last five years of his club career. Overall, he racked up 535 appearances and won 27 titles, including three in the Champions League.

In addition to his club success, Pepe was also a revered figure in the national team, representing Portugal for 17 years. He made his senior debut in 2007 and has since earned a total of 141 caps with them, even scoring eight times. He was an integral part of their Euro 2016 triumph and the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League victory.

Ronaldo to follow suit?

Portugal had two of the oldest players at Euro 2024. But now with Pepe stepping down, would Cristiano Ronaldo follow suit? The 39-year-old has often stated his intention of playing beyond 40, but his frustrating displays at the recently concluded European championship showed that age is finally catching up with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. Moreover, his retirement would allow young and talented Portuguese forwards such as Goncalo Ramos to come in and shine.
