Plymouth Argyle vs Leeds United Match Preview

The Championship race for promotion will have a decisive weekend on Saturday (Feb 17) as Leeds United travel to Plymouth Argyle as they look to cement their place in the second place. Currently, on 66 points, Leeds will look to consolidate on their early kickoff which could see them open a five-point gap between them and third-placed Southampton, although the latter will have two games in hand. The fixture has been a happy hunting scenario for the Yorkshire side as they are unbeaten in their last five matches against Plymouth Argyle.

On the other hand, Plymouth are in the mid-table, 11 points off the last playoff spot occupied by Coventry. They currently have 37 points from 31 matches and have won only twice in their last five Championship fixtures. Adding to the frustration, Leeds beat Plymouth in the FA Cup fourth round last month on their last visit to the stadium, so revenge will be on the agenda for the hosts.

Interestingly, Plymouth have not beaten Leeds since 1989 and will look to end a 35-year drought against the former English champions. As things stand, the hosts are currently sitting eight points clear of the relegation zone and will look to avoid any serious case of dropping down to League One. With no cup football to come for the rest of the season, Plymouth could fancy their chances of survival while they could still lift themselves for an unlikely title challenge.

Conor Hazard will continue in goal in Michael Cooper’s absence, and 18-year-old Ashley Phillips, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, will likely start in a back three alongside Lewis Gibson and Brendan Galloway. Mikel Miller, the team’s top scorer, and Bali Mumba will be fighting for a spot back at fullback after playing only as a substitute on Wednesday.

Given Leeds United’s depth, Daniel Farke might decide to rotate his team a little bit for the trip to Home Park. Patrick Bamford is battling to get back into the mix after missing the Swansea match due to injury, while Stuart Dallas, Pascal Struijk, and Jamie Shackleton are still limited to the treatment room.
