Eligible players who couldn’t make their countries’ squads for UEFA Euro 2024
The UEFA Euro 2024 is almost upon us, with less than a month remaining for the first match of the tournament to be held in Germany. Many teams have announced their squads for the tournament, or at least a provisional squad, which could be changed later. France, Germany, and the Netherlands have all announced their squads, while the likes of England and Spain are still pending.
There are set to be some big superstars at the competition, while others like Gavi, Thibaut Courtois, Lucas Hernandez, and more are set to miss out due to injuries. However, there are some players, who were eligible but still weren’t selected in the Euro 2024 squad or could miss out.
Let’s take a look at some of them:
Germany Euro 2024 Squad
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann announced his squad for the Euros only recently. While Die Mannschaft have struggled in recent times, there will still be big expectations from them given they are the hosts.
Toni Kroos has come out of retirement and will feature in Euro 2024. However, the likes of Leon Goretzka, Timo Werner, Serge Gnabry, and Mats Hummels have missed out on the squad. Hummels’ exclusion is especially surprising considering his excellent performances in helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final. Nagelsmann has chosen to take four goalkeepers.
France Euro 2024 Squad
Many consider France as the outright favorites to win the Euro 2024 after they reached the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Didier Deschamps announced the star-studded squad for Les Bleus recently, which had some notable absentees.
Malo Gusto and Michael Olise have not been named in the squad despite their excellent performances this season for Chelsea and Crystal Palace respectively. The likes of Moussa Diaby and Jean-Clair Todibo have also missed out.
On the other hand, N’Golo Kante, who last featured for France in 2022, is back in the squad.
Spain Euro 2024 Squad
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente hasn’t announced his squad for the Euro 2024 yet. He will certainly be without the services of Gavi and Alejandro Balde due to their respective injuries.
One of the players who could also miss out due to their form this season are Ansu Fati, who has struggled since joining Brighton & Hove Albion on loan from Barcelona last season. Ferran Torres and Gerard Moreno are also a doubt. Isco could also miss out despite his resurgence for Real Betis this season.
Italy Euro 2024 Squad
The defending champions will be captained by Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Euro 2024. They will be without Destiny Udogie due to injury. However, there are several players who could miss out on the squad regardless.
These include the likes of Marco Verratti, Federico Chiesa, and Nicolo Zaniolo. The trio haven’t had good seasons with their respective clubs and Verratti even moved to Saudi Arabia, which could hamper his chances.
Gianluca Scamacca was not named in Italy’s last squad but has had a good season with Atalanta and will hope to get in the squad this time.
Portugal Euro 2024 Squad
Roberto Martinez has a fairly fit squad to choose from so far and all the likely candidates have had decent seasons with their clubs as well.
However, Diogo Jota has had a lot of trouble with injuries for Liverpool this season, which could cost him a place in the Euro 2024 squad. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bruno Fernandes have had excellent individual seasons and are likely to feature.
England Euro 2024 Squad
There are many players who could miss out on the England squad for Euro 2024. Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford have struggled massively for Chelsea and Manchester United respectively this season. Meanwhile, Luke Shaw and Marc Guehi are in a race against time to be fit for the tournament.
Kalvin Phillips has had a season to forget after joining West Ham on loan from Manchester City in January. Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, Dominic Solanke, and Callum Wilson are contending for the second striker spot after Harry Kane.
There could also be a tussle between James Maddison and Cole Palmer. The former has been a senior member of the squad but the latter has been in sensational form for Chelsea this season.
Netherlands Euro 2024 Squad
The Netherlands also recently announced their 30-man provisional squad for Euro 2024. Manager Ronald Koeman will have to trim it down further to make an official squad.
However, two notable absentees from the provisional squad are Joshua Zirkzee and Jurrien Timber. Timber has only recently returned from an ACL injury so his exclusion could be fitness-related. Zirkzee has been in excellent form for Bologna this season but there’s no space for him over the likes of Wout Weghorst and Memphis Depay in the squad.
Belgium Euro 2024 Squad
This could arguably be the last big tournament for Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Toby Aldeweireld, etc. Hence, they will look to make the most of it.
Manager Domenico Tedesco hasn’t announced his squad for Euro 2024 yet. De Bruyne has struggled with injuries this season but should be fit enough for the tournament. Thibaut Courtois has returned from his ACL injury but has already announced that he won’t be taking part in the competition.
