Phil Foden brags about Manchester City’s progression in European competition

Manchester City struggled to establish their status as a top team in European competition, especially the Champions League. However, this started to go in their favour, mainly after winning the Champions League last season, beating the most successful team in the competition, Real Madrid, en route to the final.

Last night, City once again showed their quality when facing Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu, leading twice in front of the home side before concluding the match with a draw. The Citizens midfielder Phil Foden struck a screamer to the top bin of Andriy Lunin’s net.

Phil Foden: “This team’s come a long way now”

After the game, Foden appreciated his team’s hard work, mentioning about his team’s ability to come out of a difficult situation in the game. The England international believes City are on the right track to cement their place among the European elites.

“I don’t think it changed the game plan but I believe that sometimes you can score too early,” Foden said about his goal for City in the game. “They responded really well and we had to just settle again and play our football.

“This team’s come a long way now. When we go down we don’t put our heads down and believe in our ability. We know we can always come back from behind. It’s a great team to be a part of.”

Foden then continued commenting about how City’s tactical plan had worked effectively to match the opponents’ strategy. The draw in Santiago Bernabeu made him believe that they could deal with Madrid in the second leg.

“With the possession we had they got a bit more tired, there was more space for me to come inside and find the pockets. As the time went on the game seemed to open up a little bit more and I thought we grew into the game more, especially in the second half. We had a couple of chances and I’m just happy to make the most of one of mine. We can’t dwell on the result, it’s a fantastic result to come here and get a draw.”

City has a memorable record hosting Madrid at the Etihad. Last season, they shook the world by beating Los Blancos four goals to nil, ending Madrid’s hope to win their 15th title in the competition. During his career, Foden has played five times against Madrid, winning three and scoring two in the process.
