Pep Guardiola sends warning to Erik ten Hag ahead of FA Cup clash
Pep Guardiola has admitted that Erik ten Hag could be in trouble if he does not win the FA Cup final with Manchester United. The Manchester City manager added that it was the case for every manager, including himself.
Speaking to the media ahead of the FA Cup final, the Spaniard was responding to reports that Ten Hag was set to be sacked. While sending a warning to the Dutchman, Guardiola added that he respected the Manchester United manager and said:
“In big clubs like United or City, when you don’t win, always you are in trouble. I would be in trouble if we didn’t win. He has done many good things, I have huge respect for his job in the past and now at United.”
He added that injury issues have derailed the season at Old Trafford and said:
“I completely agree when I listen to him when he says they have not had a full squad this season and had a lot of injuries. I think this is the most important thing they have to think about because I am always focused that we have to be fit, fit, fit – otherwise we cannot use the players. They had a lot of problems and when that happens the manager suffers a lot. The squad is really good but the problem is when you cannot use them. This is a big disadvantage.”
He continued:
“Manchester United are still United. Of course, in the Premier League, we were better than them, more consistent than them, but it’s just one game. We respect United a lot, it’s always been like that since I arrived, for its history. Over the last decade, we’ve been better, but from a historical point of view, they’re the best team in England, and for that you have to respect them enormously.”
Erik ten Hag set to be sacked by Manchester United
Erik ten Hag is set to be sacked by Manchester United, as per a report in The Guardian. The publication claims that the Dutchman will be relieved of his duties this summer regardless of the FA Cup final result.
Several sources have stated that the manager knew about his future for months, and it was not a decision out of the blue. The Red Devils finished 8th in the Premier League this season.
Thomas Frank, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Kieran McKenna are reported to be the front runners for the job. Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter are also said be in the running.
