Newcastle vs Manchester City Preview

  • Tournament: Premier League.
  • Date: Saturday, September 28.
  • Time: 11:30 AM GMT.
  • Venue: St. James’ Park.

Newcastle vs Manchester City will be the early kick-off in Gameweek 7 of the Premier League weekend as the Magpies gear up to host the defending champions.

The hosts made a decent start to their campaign as they were unbeaten in their opening four fixtures, securing wins against Tottenham, Wolves, and Southampton, with a draw against Bournemouth. However, they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Fulham in their last PL fixture and will look to bounce back from that result. The Magpies will take motivation from the fact they have scored in each of their games so far this season.

City, on the other hand, began their league campaign with four-straight wins but have stuttered in the last couple of weeks. Injuries to star midfielders Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne have slightly derailed them and could also potentially be harmful to their run of fixtures ahead of them. They played a goalless draw against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League followed by a last-ditch 2-2 draw at home against a 10-man Arsenal side. City will look to find some consistency.

On that note, let’s take a look at the team news from both camps.

Manager Eddie Howe has had to deal with shortages in defence to start the season as two key players have been sidelined. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles have missed their last few games and there is no clear return date for either defender. Additionally, striker Callum Wilson has struggled with fitness and has missed the last few games as well.

Manchester City Team News

Pep Guardiola will probably be without two of the team’s most crucial stars. De Bruyne’s layoff seems to be short, while the club confirmed Rodri would be out for the rest of the season with an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. Apart from those two, defender Nathan Ake is also set to face a spell on the sidelines for the Cityzens.

Key Players to Watch in Newcastle vs Manchester City

Harvey Barnes (Newcastle)

Barnes has made a strong start to the Premier League season as he notched up four goals and assists in the opening few weeks. His stunning run of form includes goals in each of Newcastle’s last three PL games and he will be key to their chances against City.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

The towering Norwegian is spearheading the team almost single-handedly as he has bagged 10 goals and assists so far in the league. That is eight more than anybody else in the squad as Haaland continues to cement his spot as the team’s main man. However, without De Bruyne available it will be interesting to see how he adjusts.

Given their recent history in the Premier League, it seems Manchester City will have the clear upper hand heading into the upcoming match. However, strange things have happened during early kick-offs and Newcastle will hope some luck comes their way as well. This game could end in a narrow win for the visitors.
