Will Anthony Gordon Play in EFL Cup Final?

Newcastle take on Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup next weekend but they will have to do without the services of Anthony Gordon. The left winger got sent off during Newcastle’s FA Cup loss to Brighton last week. Gordon was expelled in the 83rd minute of the game for raising his hands to the face of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke and will serve a three-game suspension, given the straight red card.

Newcastle have a hard enough job as it is, given Liverpool have probably been the best side in all of Europe this season. However, as PSG showed in the UCL midweek, Liverpool can be troubled, but the Magpies will have to take their chances, something that the Parisiens didn’t do. Eddie Howe’s side interestingly have already played Arne Slot’s team twice this season, losing once 2-0 and drawing 3-3 the other time.

Will Anthony Gordon play in the Carabao Cup final?

No, unfortunately for Newcastle, Gordon is definitely ruled out of the EFL Cup final. His three match ban will cover the Premier League game against West Ham, the final against Liverpool and a subsequent league game at home versus Brentford. Magpies manager Eddie Howe stated following the match against Brighton that the club would not hesitate to contest the ruling after asserting that Gordon had no intention to “harm the player,” but they have now chosen not to pursue that avenue. It is likely that Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy will start as the wingers in the final.

Another interesting option could be Calling Wilson playing up front with Isak cutting in from the left. Worryingly for Newcastle, left back Lewis Hall has also been sidelined for the rest of the season with a foot injury, meaning they will be without their first-choice left side at Wembley. Hall will probably be replaced by Matt Targett or Tino Livramento playing on his wrong side with Kieran Trippier playing on the right.

Anthony Gordon’s performance so far this season

Gordon has been quite instrumental for Newcastle this season, with him and Alexander Isak troubling most defences they play against. He has 8 goals and 6 assists so far in all competitions this season. It’s also worth noting that he has been very good in big games, having already contributed to goals against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in this very campaign. His presence could have given Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold a lot of food for thought in the final.
