The team was established in 1946 as part of the newly founded Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA in 1949. The Knicks had winning records in each of their first nine seasons, and they advanced to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years (1951–53), losing each time. The Knicks fielded mediocre to poor teams for the remainder of the decade and into the early 1960s, but the team’s fortunes began to change with the drafting of center Willis Reed in 1964. In the late 1960s, Red Holzman became the head coach of the Knicks and they regained their early dominance. Holzman successfully guided the Knicks to two NBA championships, in 1970 and 1973. In the 1980’s Knicks made six playoff appearances but they failed to participate in the Finals.

In the 1990s Knicks led by Future Hall of Fame Patrick Ewing, this era of NBA witnessed some passionate rivalries between the New York Knicks with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat. During this time, they were known for playing tough defense under head coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy, making NBA Finals appearances in 1994 and 1999. However, they were unable to win an NBA championship during this era.

Since 2000, the Knicks team struggled to regain the success of the 20th century. The Knicks failed to reach the playoffs for eight years until 2020-21 when they were led by forward Julius Randle. The New York Knicks NBA history shows a lot of ups and down in their journey. They came so close in many NBA seasons but were unable to win more than two Championships.
