Ex-Man Utd and Barcelona forward Memphis Depay given suspended prison sentence for a drunk driving offence

Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has been handed a four-month suspended prison sentence for drunk driving as per various media sources. The forward was found with an alcohol level of 1.01 mg per litre of exhaled air, or more than 2 grams per litre of blood. He was not present when a court in Monaco handed down a suspended sentence, a 2000-pound fine, and a two-year ban from driving in the principality.

The reported event took place on the morning of August 6, 2024, when the 30-year-old was stopped in his Rolls Royce for risky driving as per the Monaco public prosecutor’s office. He was stopped by the police at the Place d’Armes and they requested a breathalyzer test which showed alcohol levels in his exhaled air.

It has also been reported that Depay had admitted to the charges and apologised at the time of the arrest but he has two weeks to appeal against his sanction. At the time of his arrest, Depay was a free agent having mutually agreed to terminate his two-and-a-half-year contract with Atletico Madrid a year early. Being a car enthusiast, Depay once got into controversy for driving a Rolls Royce to a United reserve game.
