Mason Greenwood silenced critics with stunning Marseille debut and can ‘calm controversies’, says Roberto De Zerbi

After making a move to France from Manchester United, Mason Greenwood had an unforgettable debut for Marseille, scoring twice and assisting two more in a 5-1 thrashing of Brest on Saturday.

The 22-year-old English forward who joined the French club last month is already making headlines for his on-field performance despite the controversies that have surrounded him.

De Zerbi believes goals from Mason Greenwood will ease tensions

Greenwood’s move to Marseille came with significant baggage. After leaving Manchester United in a £26.6 million deal, the young striker faced a wave of criticism due to his past legal troubles including charges of attempted rape and assault which were later dropped.

The controversy followed him to France with boos ringing out every time he touched the ball at Brest’s Francis-Le Blé stadium.

Despite the hostile reception, Greenwood showcased his undeniable talent. Marseille’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised his new signing after the match saying:

“Mason Greenwood is a player different from the others; he has an extraordinary level. I am happy that he scored. It will calm the controversies that surrounded his arrival.”

Greenwood’s impact was immediate. He not only found the back of the net twice, but also set up two goals and won a penalty which Elye Wahi converted. His performance was crucial in securing De Zerbi’s first win as Marseille’s manager, putting the team at the top of the Ligue 1 standings on goal difference.

A mixed night for Brest

For Brest, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season and are preparing for Champions League action, the match was a disappointing start. Head coach Eric Roy acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, saying, “This was not our level. We gave them way too much space on the defensive end.”

While Marseille celebrates their strong start, Greenwood’s debut is likely to keep the spotlight on him for both his talent and the controversies that continue to follow.
