Manchester United to slash workforce in controversial decision

The Red Devils are set to offload around 250 of their workers…

Manchester United are reportedly set to downsize, big-time. The Red Devils have announced that about 250 of their workforce will be redundant as the club aims to “restructure” following an internal review by INEOS, reported a fan blog UtdDistrict.

Of all the Premier League sides, United have the largest workforce, but almost a quarter of them are set to leave soon, including Old Trafford employees and some from the management too, after owners INEOS ascertained that a ‘significant transformation’ was required at the club.

Addressing the matter on a fan forum was Collette Roche, the chief operating officer of Manchester United, who said:

“There will be other departures too as we continue to restructure the club to ensure we have the right people in the right roles for long-term success. Significant transformation is required to meet the challenges we face to be successful on and off the pitch. We believe greater efficiency can lead to better outcomes.

Commenting on the layoffs, he added:

“We are proposing a club-wide redundancy programme, which we believe will reduce headcount by 250 roles. There is now a formal consultation under way with colleagues, so I can’t say any more about the process until that is completed. But we have not taken this decision lightly and would not be doing it if we didn’t feel it was necessary for the long-term health and success of the club.”

The massive changes come on the back of Manchester United’s worst-ever season in the Premier League, as Erik ten Hag’s side could only achieve an eighth-place finish with 60 points from 38 games, but managed to salvage some pride by winning the FA Cup.

Manchester United begin new season on 16 August

Manchester United are all set to kick-off the 2024-25 Premier League season on 16 August with a clash against Fulham at Old Trafford. Following a disastrous top-flight campaign last time, Erik ten Hag’s side will have a point to prove here, and will be looking to begin the new season with a resounding victory. They are currently in the United States for the pre-season and will play Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool in their next three friendlies.
