Manchester United set to begin talks with highly-rated midfielder as first signing in Sir Jim Ratcliffe era
According to Mirror, Manchester United are looking to open talks with Benfica midfielder Joao Neves for a potential move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils recently received a major boost as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS bought a 25% stake in the club, pending Premier League approval. Manchester United are expected to make big changes with the new investment, especially in improving recruitment.
They could begin the era by signing Neves, who has impressed during his time with Benfica. The 19-year-old has a £103 million release clause in his contract, which expires in 2028.

However, Benfica are unwilling to let Neves leave in the January transfer window. Manager Roger Schmidt has said that none of his players will be sold this winter. Although, clubs can potentially sign a pre-agreement with Neves for a potential summer transfer.
Neves is highly rated across the world, having made 49 senior appearances for Benfica, and also registering two goals and three assists. He has also earned three caps for Portugal at just 19 years old.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are hoping for a big revamp under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Casemiro is expected to leave soon. Christan Eriksen and Scott McTominay’s future is also under speculation. They signed Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina on loan last season but the Moroccan has failed to impress.
However, Manchester United will have to compete with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool for Neves’ signature.
