Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick admits ‘contact’ with Bayern Munich

Rangnick has emerged as a potential successor to Tuchel

Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that there’s been contact with Bayern Munich. The Bavarians are currently looking for a replacement for the outgoing Thomas Tuchel, and Rangnick has emerged as a potential successor.

Following his disappointing spell with United, Rangnick joined Austria’s national team in a permanent role and has guided them into Euro 2024, where his side take on France, Poland, and the Netherlands in the group stages.

Bayern’s top choice originally was Xabi Alonso, but the Spaniard opted to remain with Bayer Leverkusen. This has prompted the Bundesliga giants to eye Rangnick for a season, as the club aims to pursue Alonso once again in 2025.

He admitted that Bayern indeed reached out to him, and Rangnick hasn’t refused to rule out a possible move either.

“Bayern Munich have contacted me and I have also informed the OFB (Austrian Football Association). We have a very trusting relationship. My focus is on the Austrian national team. We are completely focused on the European Championship. I feel very comfortable here. At the moment, there’s no reason for me to focus intensively and specifically on that.

“The moment Bayern would say, ‘We want you’. And then I have to ask myself, ‘Do I even want this?’ If I want to do something else, I will first discuss it with the OFB. We want to look after this team (Austria) as well as possible — and do as well as possible. I have a close and trusting relationship with my team. It won’t play better just because I say, ‘I’ll definitely be here for the next four years.'”

Rangnick’s terrible record means he isn’t a good fit for Bayern

Ralf Rangnick managed only 24 games in the Premier League with Manchester United, winning only 10 and losing seven times. His brief spell was marked by turmoil, as the Red Devils hardly improved after Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s sacking. During those 24 league games, his team scored just 33 goals and conceded just as many, seeing some humiliating losses along the way such as 4-0 losses to Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.
