Man City records unique feat for first time after beating Man United in Premier League derby

Manchester City’s quest to win their fourth consecutive Premier League title took a decisive lift on Sunday (Mar 3) after they beat arch-rivals Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. A brace from Phil Foden coupled with Erling Haaland’s 18th Premier League of the season saw Pep Guardiola’s side run riot. However, the win became sweeter as City achieved a rare feat for the first time against Manchester United during the Premier League era as they now sit on Liverpool’s shoulder in the title hunt.

Having trailed through Marcus Rashford’s stunning early goal, City found their scoring and winning shoes in the second half to go on 62 points in the Premier League. However, the come-from-behind victory over Manchester United was their first during the Premier League era. Ever since the Premier League began in the 1992-93 season, United had never lost a Manchester derby after taking a lead. The remarkable achievement also meant that Sir Alex Ferguson never lost a Manchester City derby in the Premier League while his team scored the first goal.

City on the 29th occasion in the blockbuster fixture fell behind and needed to script history of sorts to win the match. In the build-up, Pep was reminded of United’s number at the Etihad since he took over the reins of the side in 2016. United had won four times in eight Premier League derbies at Etihad Stadium while the hosts had also drawn against Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool at home.

However, shattering all previous record and recent form Pep’s men won the fixture for the first time having gone behind.

Tight title race

The Premier League weekend saw some remarkable turnaround by teams to keep their hopes alive to achieve their targets. Liverpool snatched a 99th-minute winner against Nottingham Forest on Saturday while Spurs beat Crystal Palace after falling behind with 15 minutes remaining in the match. City’s (62) comeback, now sees them within a point of Liverpool (63) while Arsenal could go 61 points if they beat Sheffield United on Monday evening.

The wins for Man City and Liverpool have also assured that next week’s Premier League meeting between the two rivals will be a top-of-the-table clash. The clash will take place at Anfield in what will be Pep Guardiola’s final visit to the stadium in Jurgen Klopp’s presence. Both teams will come into that match on the back of European football in midweek which will make things more spicier.
