Early Life
Malo Gusto was born on May 19, 2003 in Decines-Charpieu, a locality in the Metropolis of Lyon.
Gusto’s father wanted to make his son a rugby player when he was a teenager, but young Gusto soon chose to play association football, pursuing his dream to become a professional footballer while studying for a Bachelors degree in Technology.
He joined the Lyon academy and started playing for them at the under-14 level.
Career
Lyon
Gusto happened to arrive in Lyon the same year that the club moved to the Stade des Lumieres, in his home town. He impressed all coaches at the club and they agreed to offer him his first professional contract in December 2020.
The defender had already made a few appearances for the youth teams before the contract was offered. Gusto made his professional debut for Lyon on January 24, 2021, replacing Bruno Guimaraes in the 90th minute of a 5–0 Ligue 1 away win against their local rivals Saint-Etienne.
Later that year, Gusto signed a new deal with Lyon that would keep him at the club until 2024. In total, he made 47 appearances for the senior team between 2021-23.
Chelsea
Now came the big move for Gusto! In January 2023, after some heavy scouting, Chelsea announced the signing of the Frenchman on a deal until 2030. Lyon officially reported the transfer fee to be €30m plus €5m in bonuses. The Blues loaned him back to Lyon until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Gusto made his debut for Chelsea in the 2023-24 season, featuring for them on August 13, 2023 against Liverpool in a 1-1 draw.

International Career
At youth level, Gusto first played as a midfielder for the France under-16 team, but was later selected as a fullback with the under-17 and under-18 teams. In September 2021, he earned his first cap for the France under-19 team, before being promoted to the under-21 team just a month later.
It was on October 9, 2023 that Gusto earned his first senior national team call-up for matches against the Netherlands and Scotland, replacing the injured Jules Kounde. Four days later, on October 13, 2023, he made his international debut in the European Championship qualifier match against the Netherlands, coming off the bench in the 80th minute, helping France to a 2–1 victory, clinching qualification to the tournament finals as a result.

Personal Life/Family
Nicknamed ‘Timal’, Malo Gusto is the only child of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Philippe Gusto. As a child, Gusto was surrounded by both nuclear and extended family members, majorly his parents and cousins.
He and his cousins lived together in his family home. Friends and neighbours who knew him have confessed Gusto was actually quite a calm and respectful boy and was excellent at sports from a young age.
Rugby was Malo’s father’s favourite sport and he wanted his son to take that up as a career. Before joining a football academy, Gusto was enrolled by his father at the Avenir XV Rugby academy. However, Malo switched to football, which is said to have hurt his dad for quite some time. His family was middle-class with his dad working for a French railway company, who operates all of France’s railway traffic.
