Liverpool sweat as Mohamed Salah picks up injury with Egypt at AFCON
Liverpool and their fans are massively concerned after superstar winger Mohamed Salah appeared to suffer an injury on international duty with Egypt on Thursday, January 18. The winger came off just before halftime, holding his hamstring, in a clash against Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah started the game as expected, captaining Egypt. However, he went down holding his hamstring in the 45th minute and had to be replaced with Mostafa Fathi. Egypt played out a 2-2 draw against Ghana as Omar Marmoush (69’) and Mostafa Mohamed’s (74’) goals canceled out Mohammed Kudus’ brace (45+3’, 71’).
However, one of the big talking factors from the game was Salah’s injury. Both Egypt and Liverpool fans are now waiting with held breaths for a full diagnosis of the winger. After the game, the Pharaohs’ manager Rui Vitoria said that he reckons the injury isn’t serious but we’ll have to wait and see.
He said via Metro:
“We don’t know yet what the problem is. I hope it’s not a big problem. It was difficult timing for us because in the second half we could only make two substitutions. I think it’s not dangerous but let’s see.”
Salah has been a key player for both Egypt and Liverpool over the years, including this season.
In Egypt’s first AFCON 2023 clash against Mozambique, he provided an assist and scored via a penalty to secure a 2-2 draw. After the Ghana clash, Vitoria’s side are second in their group, one point behind Cape Verde, who have a game in hand.
Meanwhile, for Liverpool, Salah has scored 18 goals and provided nine assists in 27 games across competitions this season. His exploits have helped them sit atop the Premier League table, two points above Manchester City.
Liverpool have also reached the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 and the FA Cup fourth round, where they will face Norwich City. The Reds also hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Fulham and will compete in the second leg on January 24.

Salah was seen smiling while walking off after the game through the media section, which could perhaps make one hopeful for a minor injury. However, it will only be confirmed before Egypt’s next match against Cape Verde on January 22.
