Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp provides Alisson Becker injury update
Liverpool have suffered a huge blow as goalkeeper Alisson Becker has suffered a hamstring injury. The Brazilian picked up the injury ahead of the Reds’ 4-1 win over Brentford at Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League on February 27.
“Alisson’s injury is a serious one”- Jurgen Klopp
Manager Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed that Alisson’s injury is a serious one and that he will miss most of the remainder of the campaign. He insisted that the Brazilian will be back for the final few games but it is still unclear.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s league clash at Nottingham Forest, Klopp said (via This is Anfield):
“There is no real timescale on it, but it is a proper muscle injury. Different players recover differently. That is it pretty much. It is not a short one.”
“It is not that he will be in contention for next week or something like that. We have to wait a few more weeks, definitely, for him. He is working in the gym, not on the pitch. It is a rather serious one but not a season-ending injury.”
This comes as a huge blow for Liverpool as Alisson has been a vital member of Klopp’s squad over the years. The Reds signed him from AS Roma for a reported fee of €72.5 million in 2018. He has since made 255 appearances for them, keeping 112 clean sheets.
Alisson is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has helped the Merseysiders win numerous trophies, including one UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp highlights Caoimhin Kelleher’s importance amidst Alisson injury blow
In Alisson’s absence, Caoimhin Kelleher will take place as the first choice between the sticks. The Republic of Ireland international has already made 17 appearances across competitions, keeping four clean sheets.
He was in goal in their 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final last week, making some crucial saves to keep his side in the game. Ahead of the Nottingham clash, Klopp spoke about how the difference between his first-choice and second-choice goalkeepers isn’t huge, saying:
“The gap between the first and second goalkeeper cannot be a big amount. There must be quality in that position because the football demands are just too big to now play the goalkeeper for four years in a row in all the competitions.
“A fit player would always tell you he could play, and goalkeepers are special players but will say that, but no-one can do that. That is why we are very happy now.”
Having come through Liverpool’s academy, Kelleher has made 38 senior appearances across competitions so far, keeping 14 clean sheets.
