Liverpool prepared to offer big fee to sign Teun Koopmeiners this January

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Team Talk), Liverpool are looking to make a big signing in the ongoing January transfer window in the form of Teun Koopmeiners. The Reds are looking to strengthen their midfield and believe the Dutchman would be a good fit.

The Reds underwent a major midfield overhaul last summer Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain all left the club. Liverpool then signed Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side are competing in four competitions this season. They lead the Premier League table after 21 games and reached the UEFA Europa League Round of 16. They’ve also reached the EFL Cup semi-final and face Norwich City in the FA Cup fourth round.

Hence, Klopp is looking to bring in reinforcements this January and has identified Koopmeiners as a potential signing. As per Gazzetta dello Sport, he has also convinced Liverpool to pay €45 million for the midfielder.

Koopmeiners has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances with Atalanta since joining the club from AZ Alkmaar in 2021. He is a box-to-box midfielder and can also play as a No. 6. The Dutchman has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 26 games across competitions for Atalanta this season.

The Italian side are currently engaged in a top four in the Serie A. They are currently fifth, just a point behind Fiorentina. Hence, they are unlikely to want to part ways with one of their key players in Koopmeiners.

However, a big fee could tempt them into selling the Dutchman, who has over two years left on his contract.

Newcastle United and Juventus are also said to be interested in signing Koopmeiners. As per the aforementioned report, Atalanta would be more willing to sell him to the Premier League rather than strengthen the Bianconeri.
