Liverpool close to making Giorgi Mamardashvili the first signing of the Arne Slot era

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will become the first signing of the Arne Slot era. The Georgian shot-stopper was superb for his nation at Euro 2024 and put many European clubs on notice, and he’s Anfield-bound.

The Athletic reports that Mamardashvili is set to join the Reds in a deal worth around €40 million (£34 million). The 23-year-old will join Slot’s Merseysiders next year and spend this season with Valencia. He could be Alisson Becker’s long-term replacement, with the 33-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper’s contract expiring in 2027.

Mamardashvili has been Valencia’s starting goalkeeper for several seasons, including the 2023-24 campaign. He made 37 appearances across competitions, helping his side keep 13 clean sheets. He caught the eye at Euro 2024 with a clean sheet in Georgia’s famous 2-0 win against Portugal.

Liverpool are yet to make a signing since Slot arrived earlier this summer and Mamardashvili’s capture won’t be an immediate addition to his squad. They were heavily linked with Spanish holding midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but he rejected a move to Anfield in favor of staying at Real Sociedad.

Caimohin Kelleher’s future is up in the air amid Liverpool’s interest and expected signing of Mamardashvili. The Republic of Ireland shot-stopper was admired by Slot’s predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, who once hailed him ‘the best No.2 in world football’.

The 25-year-old most likely has doubts over his role at Anfield, given the situation, and he’s not short of interest. Serie A giants Juventus are showing interest and scouted him on several occasions last season. He’ll be available for around £30 million should the Old Lady make a concrete move for the Irishman.

Kelleher was handed a prominent run in Klopp’s starting XI last season while Alisson was injured. He kept five clean sheets in 26 games across competitions and was vital in the Merseysiders’ run to Carabao Cup glory. He has a year left on his contract and has been with the club since 2019.
