Lionel Messi reacts after Argentina’s controversial defeat to Morocco in Olympics
Copa America winner Lionel Messi was left shocked by Argentina’s controversial defeat to Morocco in the Paris Olympic opener on Wednesday. Morocco were leading the game 2-1 when a whopping 15 minutes was added in extra time.
Facundo Medina scored in the 90+16 minute to level the game, but opposition fans’ protest halted the game for almost two hours. Fans were seen invading the pitch whereas bottles and objects were thrown at the Argentina players which forced the match officials to suspend the game. Both sets of players left the ground and were confined in the dressing room.
There was confusion as to whether the game was concluded or suspended as the players later returned to the stadium to play the last three minutes of added time in an empty stadium. Facundo Medina’s goal was chalked off two hours after the play was paused.
How did Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano react to the controversial defeat?
Two-time Copa America winner Lionel Messi took to Instagram to write ‘Insolito’ on his stories which translates to extraordinary or unusual in English. Even manager and Messi’s former teammate Javier Mascherano was left fuming and branded the game as the ‘The biggest circus I’ve ever seen!’
“I don’t remember something like this happening at this level, that the match is suspended for an hour and a half, warming up for 10 minutes and then playing three,” said Argentina’s manager.
“What happened on the pitch was a scandal, it’s not a neighborhood tournament, it’s the Olympics.”
