Lille 1-0 Real Madrid: Player ratings as Jonathan David’s penalty hands the Mastiffs shock Champions League win

Real Madrid went down 1-0 to Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday in their Champions League clash. Jonathan David struck the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the first half after Eduardo Camavinga was adjudged to handled the ball inside the box. Los Blancos desperately sought an equalizer after the break, even throwing the kitchen sink in the closing stages, but couldn’t breakdown Lille’s stoic backline. Goalkeeper

Lucas Chevalier – 7

With four saves on the night, the Lille custodian played an instrumental role in keeping Real Madrid at bay.

Defenders

Tiago Santos – 7.5

A revelation on the right flank, Tiago Santos came up big for his side with his vital interventions. Full of energy and willingness while looking unperturbed by the scale of his task tonight, he made three clearances, six interceptions, and won six ground duels too.

Bafode Diakite – 7

His six clearances are a testament to his excellent vision on the night as Diakite left everything on the field to deny their mighty visitors.

Alexsandro Ribeiro – 6.5

He complemented Diakite well in defense with his positional awareness and concentration.

Gabriel Gudmundsson – 6.5

He may not have always come out on top, but Gabriel Gudmundsson put in the effort. He made five clearances and tackles while winning five of his 13 ground duels too.

Midfielders

Ayyoub Bouaddi – 6

The 17-year-old was calm and composed, but his lack of experience showed as Real Madrid dominated the midfield, especially towards the end when they desperately sought an equalizer.

Benjamin Andre – 5

The Lille captain too struggled to impose himself in the game against Real Madrid’s marauding midfielders. In fact, he won just one of his five ground duels and lost possession 20 times. Andre misplaced passes more often than not too.

Forwards

Edon Zhegrova – 6.5

Edon Zhegrova laid two key passes and four crosses as he asked questions of Real Madrid’s defense with his creativity.

Remy Cabella – 6

His passing was excellent but severely lacked the end-product as Cabella didn’t muster a single shot in the game.

Mitchel Bakker – 6

Like most of his attacking cohorts, the Dane too offered no great shakes in the offense, not making a single effort at goal or laying a single key pass.

Jonathan David – 8

What a way to mark your first start of the season! Jonathan David, goalless in the Champions League for nearly three years, clinically dispatched a penalty in the added minutes of the opening stanza to give his side a shock lead. He netted for the first time since December 2021 against Wolfsburg.

Substitutes

Osame Sahraoui – 6

He made some excellent passes and competed hard for the ball.

Real Madrid Player Ratings vs Lille

Goalkeeper

Andriy Lunin – 6.5

The Real Madrid custodian faced a little challenge in goal as Lille were lacking in their usual attacking flair, but was beaten to a penalty in the first half by Jonathan David, who fired the right side of the goal while the Ukrainian guessed the wrong way.

Defenders

Daniel Carvajal – 7

An absolute menace down the right flank, Daniel Carvajal had an excellent outing at both ends of the field. Going forward, he added an additional layer of attacking threat for Real Madrid with his crosses and by stretching out the Lille defense, while also never sacrificing his defensive duties.

Eder Militao – 6

With Lille barely ever threatening, the Brazilian had a comfortable outing, but still went off early in the second half without a single clearance, or interception or block made. He did, however, complete over 90% of his passes, which showed his importance in building from the back.

Antonio Rudiger – 6

Antonio Rudiger showed excellent positional awareness and vision to keep everything kosher in defense as Lille never had a clear sight of the goal, besides that penalty moment. He completed 94% of his passes and made two clearances as well as blocking one shot.

Ferland Mendy – 5

An uncharacteristically poor game from the Frenchman, whose involvement was minimal in the opening stanza. Besides his immaculate passing range, which saw him complete 91% of his passes, Mendy offered no great shakes and was hence taken off at the break.

Midfielders

Federico Valverde – 7

Real Madrid’s anchor in midfield, Federico Valverde won all three of his ground duels while also registering three interceptions and one clearance.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 6

The Frenchman struggled to gain control of the midfield and was left chasing shadows for most of the time. But on the bright side, his immaculate passing means Camavinga played a key role in dictating Real Madrid’s play.

Eduardo Camavinga – 5

Perhaps his weakest Champions League display for Real Madrid. Eduardo Camavinga had an iffy outing where nothing seemed to break for him. A clumsy handball in the first half gifted Lille a penalty which David clinically converted. His tackles were ill-timed and even went into the books after the break for one such foul.

Jude Bellingham – 7

The Real Madrid star was in the thick of the things. He chased down every loose ball on his flank, causing tremors in the Lille defense, and hounded his markers for possession. Bellingham won seven of his nine ground duels while making six tackles too.

Forwards

Endrick – 6

A massive downgrade in his performance compared to his goalscoring heroics on the opening day which saw Endrick net Real Madrid’s third of the evening against Stuttgart. Here, the Brazilian was sloppy and seemed to have forgotten his attacking boots at home. He also sliced a glorious chance high and wide towards the end of the first half.

Vinicius Junior – 6

Real Madrid’s stellar goalscoring figure looked relatively subdued today. The runs were there, the crosses were there, but the end-product was lacking.

Substitutes

Fran Garcia – 6

He came on for the ineffective Ferland Mendy and was hardly any better.

Luka Modric – 6

The Croatian couldn’t weave his usual magic today.

Kylian Mbappe – 6

He was brought on to boost their attack but came a cropper.

Arda Guler – 6.5

Probably the brightest substitution as Guler laid two key passes and looked bright in attack.

Manager

Carlo Ancelotti – 5

The Italian would be frustrated with his side’s performance tonight as their attacking flair was lacking and one defensive mistake eventually cost them the game.
