Leander Dendoncker’s future at Aston Villa hangs in balance after the below-par 2023-24 campaign
Leander Dendoncker played just eight games for Aston Villa in the 2023-24 season, before being loaned out to Seria A club Napoli for the rest of the season. However, he also struggled for game-time at the Italian club. The 29-year-old Belgian midfielder had just three outings for Naples in the recently concluded season.
The former Wolves player also missed out on Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad, considering his lack of on-field minutes and appearances leading up to the tournament. With the 2024 summer transfer window being open currently, reports from ‘Birmingham Live’ do point out that it is more likely that Dendoncker will be loaned out again. This is because Villa does have viable options in the midfield as of now, and perhaps he doesn’t fit in Unai Emery’s plans at this point in time.
But the conundrum is that there are not many takers for the Belgian midfielder at this stage. This obviously makes sense, as it could be due to a lack of matches last season backed further by a Euro snub. However ‘Birmingham Live’s’ report does signify that a potential suitor may come in for him when the transfer window nears its end.
Dendoncker’s current contract with Aston Villa expires in June 2026. He hasn’t been a regular name on the team sheet for the Midlands-based club since joining from the fierce Premier League rivals Wolves a couple of years back.
