List of La Liga Winners: All You Need to Know About History of Spanish League Champions

La Liga is the top-division football league in Spain. As it has a long history, the La Liga winners list contains multiple top clubs who have won the years-old prestigious league. The current champions of the Spanish top league are Real Madrid, who reigned supreme in the 2023/24 season.

Since La Liga’s inception back in 1929, top teams across Spain enrolled their names in the league and fought for the top honors. Barcelona won the inaugural edition of the football competition. Only eight different clubs have been able to keep their hands on the silverware to date, as few major clubs have been dominating it for decades.

Since La Liga began its journey in 1929, eight teams have won the league. The first edition saw only 10 teams taking part in the football competition and Barcelona winning the trophy at the end of the season. The list of La Liga winners contains only eight clubs’ names, with Real Madrid and Barcelona on top.

Meanwhile, the Spanish top flight now welcomes 20 teams in the league. The last three teams in the points table get relegated and the top three teams from the Spanish second division earn La Liga promotion to fill that void. The top four teams of the league also earn direct UEFA Champions League qualification. In the 95-year history of La Liga, 62 teams have played in the league.

Real Madrid (36 La Liga titles)

Real Madrid leads the list of Spanish La Liga winners with 36 titles. The Madrid-based club clinched its first top-division domestic trophy in the 1931/32 season. They went on to win the league the very next season.

After that, they had to wait for almost 20 years to become the champions of Spain before winning the Spanish top flight for the third time in the 1953/54 season. From 1960 to 1965, Los Blancos won five consecutive La Liga titles. This is still the biggest winning streak in Spanish top-flight history. They claimed this feat again in between 1985 and 1990. Since then, no club has been able to repeat this in La Liga history.

In the last La Liga calendar year, Real Madrid recorded 95 points in 38 matches, including 29 victories, eight draws, and one loss. The Carlo Ancelotti-led side beat their arch-rivals, Barcelona, by 10 points in the points tally to lift the La Liga crown. With 36 titles to their name, Real Madrid is the most successful club in Spain.

Barcelona (27 La Liga titles)

Barcelona is the second-best club in the La Liga winners list. The club from the Catalan province of Spain was the winner in the inaugural season of the Spanish top flight in 1929. They played the final round of the season against Real Union to win the silverware with 25 points from 18 official matches.

Their second La Liga trophy came in the 1944/45 season. Barcelona’s biggest winning streak was between 1990 and 1994, when they became La Liga winners for four consecutive seasons. Since 2009, they have won nine Spanish top-division trophies.

Atletico Madrid (11 La Liga titles)

Another Madrid-based club, Atletico Madrid, is one of the most successful La Liga winners. They have won 11 titles in total, having finished second in the league 10 times in the process. Their first and last La Liga title were in the 1939/40 and 2020/21 seasons.
