LaLiga standings after Matchday 29
Exciting storylines have formed within the LaLiga standings as the football season comes to an end. There have been surprise packages, teams performing below par, and also several on and off-field controversies in another special campaign.
Real Madrid is leading as one of the title contenders
Usual suspects Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid find themselves close to the top. This year, they are joined by surprise package Girona, who looked like title contenders for the first half of the season. Having finished 10th last year, their jump into the top four has been remarkable.
Lower down the table are Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Villarreal and Valencia. Sociedad have fallen two places down from last season’s fourth-placed finish, as Athletic Club and Girona have moved above them. Betis and Villarreal finished in the European spots last season but have struggled to keep up with the pace this year.
The relegation zone has bottom side Almeria and 19th placed Granada earmarked for relegation to the Segunda divison, with both teams at least five wins from safety. Cadiz in 18th are five points from safety and still have some hope.
With that said, let’s take a look at the detailed LaLiga standings.

Real Madrid are the runaway league leaders with a comfortable eight-point cushion over Barcelona in second. The race to finish inside the top four is well and truly alive as seven points separate Girona, Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid from third to fifth.
Real Sociedad occupy a comfortable spot in ‘no-man’s land’ in sixth as they are out of reach of the team above as well as below them.
Lower down, the race to get into the Conference League is also heating up. Six teams from seventh to 12th in the table are all in contention, with just six points separating them.
Arguably the biggest decline over the last couple of seasons has been that of Sevilla. Having finished fourth in 2021-22, they finished 12th last season and are currently 16th. To think that they played in the Champions League this year as winners of the Europa League last year makes this even more incredible.
LaLiga standings: Relegation contenders
Almeria and Granada look set for the drop with just 13 and 14 points, respectively. Cadiz above them have 22 points and are five behind Celta Vigo in 17th place.
A few wins and a few draws could greatly help their cause. However, seeing that they have won just thrice, it seems draws could be their only saving grace.
