EURO 2024

Key players who could miss UEFA Euro 2024 due to injury

While UEFA Euro 2024, set to be hosted in Germany, is still a few months away, there are some players, who, unfortunately, won’t be able to take part in the competition due to injury. These players have suffered long-term injuries with their clubs and are unlikely to feature in the international competition.

There are some big stars like Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, who won’t feature at the Euro 2024 due to their countries not qualifying. However, some of the teams that will take part in the tournament could be without some of their key players.

1. Gavi (Spain)

Gavi suffered a harrowing ACL injury while on international duty with Spain in November. He has not only been ruled for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign but also for the Euro 2024.

The 19-year-old will be a big miss for Spain, having already made 27 appearances for them and scoring five goals in that time. He made 15 appearances for Barcelona before his injury, registering two goals and one assist.

2. Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)

Thibaut Courtois suffered an ACL injury before the start of the 2023-24 season in what was a big blow for Real Madrid. The veteran goalkeeper announced soon after his injury that he will not take part in the Euro 2024.

Courtois could still return to action for Real Madrid this season. He is back in training and could return to the matchday squad in April. However, he’s confirmed that he won’t feature at Euro 2024. He’s made 102 appearances for Belgium so far.

3. Wesley Fofana (France)

The Chelsea defender suffered an ACL injury in the summer and hasn’t featured this season yet. While he could still recover in time for Euro 2024, it is highly unlikely that he will make it to France’s squad, which has an array of excellent defenders.

Fofana has earned just one cap with the French national team that came last year.

4. Ivan Perisic (Croatia)

Ivan Perisic has been one of the key members of the Croatian side, which has achieved great things over the years. He helped them finish runners-up in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and third place in the 2022 World Cup.

Perisic has scored 33 goals and provided 30 assists in 129 games for Croatia. However, the 35-year-old suffered an ACL injury back in September and could miss Euro 2024.

Perisic registered two assists in six games for Tottenham Hotspur before his injury. He has now joined his boyhood club Hajduk Split on loan until the end of the season.

5. David Alaba (Austria)

Austria will be without their captain David Alaba at the Euro 2024 after the ACL injury he suffered in December 2023. The 31-year-old defender made 17 appearances across competitions for Real Madrid before suffering the injury in a La Liga clash against Villarreal.

Alaba has made 105 appearances for Austria, scoring 15 goals and providing 21 assists.

6. Tyrone Mings (England)

Tyrone Mings had featured for England in the Euro 2024 qualifiers in June last year and would’ve hoped to cement his place in the squad moving forward.

However, he suffered an ACL injury with Aston Villa during their first Premier League game of the season against Newcastle United. He has been out of action since. While he might recover before the Euro 2024, he is unlikely to make it to the England squad.

Mings has made 18 appearances for the Three Lions, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

7. Luke Shaw (England)

Luke Shaw’s injury is the latest addition to the list of players who could miss UEFA Euro 2024. The English left-back had suffered a muscle injury earlier this season and only returned to action in January.

However, Shaw suffered another muscle injury in Manchester United’s clash against Luton Town. As per ESPN, the England international could be out for the season and miss the UEFA Euro 2024.

Shaw has made 31 appearances for England, scoring three goals and providing nine assists.
