“We deserved to lose”: Jurgen Klopp comments on Liverpool’s humiliating home defeat to Atalanta

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that his team deserved the shocking result against Atalanta in their latest Europa League outing. The Reds were mashed with three goals to nil by their visitors, the first home defeat since February 2023.

At the post-match press conference, Klopp told the media that he would not be talking too long describing the game. The German gaffer even admitted that his boys were playing terribly despite being at home in front of the infamous Anfield crowd.

“We must feel that now”: Jurgen Klopp comments on Liverpool’s poor home show against Atalanta

“Oh we can make this the shortest press conference of all time,” Klopp opened the session via BBC. “It just was a really bad game, oh my God. We kept playing into their hands, we deserved to lose and we must feel that now.

“I mean, you ask me probably the game next Thursday but there’s Crystal Palace in between. So, congratulations, Atalanta, really well done. That’s it.”

Liverpool have to win with a four-goal gap in the second leg at Gewiss Stadium next season. Such a scenario has awakened the core memory of Liverpool fans around the world, as they have been in a familiar situation a couple of years ago.

In the 2018/19 season of the Champions League, The Reds were trailing 0-3 in the first leg after losing to Barcelona. A week later, Klopp’s boys demonstrated a performance that was later on dubbed as one of the best comebacks ever in the Champions League, winning 4-0 in the second leg at Anfield.

However, the case is a little different this time as Liverpool have to play the deciding leg in the opponents; ground which makes things unlikely. But statistically, The Reds will go to Italy with a decent record when playing at Atalanta’s ground, winning 5-0 on their latest visit in 2020.
