“It’s completely inexplicable” – Joshua Kimmich fumes over his Bayern teammates for “friendly game” against Dortmund
It was yet another day to forget at the office for Bayern Munich after their remote Bundesliga title chances were all but done after they lost at home to arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (Mar 30). A 2-0 defeat which has yet again left more questions than answers for the Bayern side could now see Bayer Leverkusen crowned German champions in two weeks if a certain set of results is met. After the match, star midfielder Joshua Kimmich questioned the team’s mentality and approach in the second half.
Joshua Kimmich slams Bayern Munich after defeat
“I wonder how we can put in such a performance in a game like this. It’s completely inexplicable to me, it’s completely incomprehensible. In the second half, you had the feeling that nothing was at stake. It was like a friendly game,” Kimmich said in the post-match after Bayern’s 2-0 defeat.
“We players should go home and question ourselves. If we play like this, it will be difficult next week against Heidenheim and of course also in the Champions League.”
Goals from Karim Adeyemi in the 10th minute and Julian Ryerson in the 83rd minute sealed a famous win for Dortmund. The match also saw Harry Kane miss a simple tap-in header after being through on goal in the 22nd minute.
The embarrassing defeat was Bayern’s first in the Bundesliga against Borussia Dortmund in more than five years. Not since November 2018 had the Bavarian side lost to the Dortmund side which has left Bayer Leverkusen with a finger on the Bundesliga shield. The win for Dortmund was also their first at the Allianz Arena in almost 10 years. The defeat was also Bayern Munich’s second home defeat in the Bundesliga having earlier lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen in January.
Attentions turn to Champions League
With Bayer Leverkusen winning 2-1 earlier in the day against Hoffenheim, it has now seen the former needing just nine more points to win the Bundesliga. It could be concluded that Bayern’s only opportunity to win silverware will come in the Champions League where they will face Arsenal in the quarterfinal. A win for them will see them either face Manchester City or Real Madrid. However, that will be the only competition where Harry Kane and Eric Dier could break their trophy drought.
Before they turn their attention toward the Champions League, they will face Heidenheim away from home next week.
