Jeremy Doku scores late goal for Manchester City in the FA Cup final
The Belgian reduced the deficit to make it 2-1
Manchester City striker Jeremy Doku was on target in the FA Cup finals against Manchester United in the 87th minute. The Belgian came off the bench and scored a lovely goal from just outside the box to hand the holders a lifeline.
Against all the odds, United raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half, courtesy of goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. A miscommunication between Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega allowed Garnacho to tap home into a empty net, whereas Mainoo rounded off a wonderful team move of slick, defense-splitting passes.
Having lost the last year’s final 2-1 to City, Erik ten Hag’s men seemed like a side on a mission to avenge their loss, and their performance impeccably reflected that. City huffed and puffed in search of goals to get themselves back in the game, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by.
Erling Haaland, who looked subdued for much of the game, hit the bar midway through the second-half, but City’s persistence appeared to pay off late on when Doku pulled one back for then.
Following some neat footwork on the edge of the box, the Belgian evaded Garnacho and lashed a shot into the far post, which flew beyond Andre Onana for 2-1. At the time of writing, the game is in stoppage time with Manchester United still winning.
Manchester City’s back-to-back double hopes on the brink
Having set a string of records in recent times, Manchester City were on course for another unique one, which is back-to-back league doubles. The Sky Blues swooped the Premier League and the FA Cup en route to completing a historic treble last year. Now having retained their top-flight crown, Pep Guardiola’s side were aiming for a second consecutive league double, a feat not achieved by any English side in history. As things stand, it’s not happening this year.
