“Wanted to do my talking on the pitch today…”: James Maddison Fires Back at Roy Keane After Spurs Beat United 1-0
Tottenham Hotspur star attacking midfielder James Maddison silenced his critic football pundit Roy Keane following his cryptic remark on the Englishmen, upon his return from injury absence.
The Englishmen netted home a close-range finish, the only winning goal for Spurs in their 1-0 victory over Man United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Thanks to his goal, the North London club recorded their first home success after a 12-game run without a win.
Earlier this week, the former Man United icon stated on the ‘Stick to Football podcast‘, “If you are a Spurs player in the dressing room, and Maddison’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking at him going ‘Oh Jesus, he’s back today, we’re going to be fine!’ He got relegated at Leicester, he’s about to get relegated at Spurs.”
“He’s a talented player, but if you’re a player in the Spurs dressing room and he’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking and going, ‘James is back today — we’re going to be fine!'”.
The Spur’s number ten clapped back at Keane for his comments but subtly with “There was a little bit of outside noise this week.” response. After scoring the crucial goal James Maddison pulled off his dart celebration and gently kept his finger on his lips directing a shushing motion.
“People will have their opinions.”, Maddison told Sky Sports, “I wanted to do my talking on the pitch today so I hope there’s a certain few that enjoyed me being the match-winner today.
The former Leicester City played added, “Nobody is more critical of myself than me. To be fair to the gaffer, he always talks about blocking out the outside noise, but sometimes it is difficult, it is constantly in your face.”
James Maddison Injury Timeline
The 28-year-old sustained the calf injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s recent Europa League match against TSG Hoffenheim in January last month and was subsequently ruled out for two to three weeks.
In the 2024/25 campaign, Maddison has been the best player for the Premier League giants, leading the goal-scoring list with 8 goals and having already provided 4 assists prior to his injury across all competitions.

It comes as a big boost for Spurs as their key player has worked his way back to full fitness and announces his arrival in style netting a much-needed goal. Following a vital three points Spurs are currently in 12th position and preparing themselves for the upcoming UEFA Europa League Round of 16 challenge.
