Borussia Dortmund unlikely to make Jadon Sancho move from Manchester United permanent
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastien Kehl has confirmed that the club are unlikely to sign winger Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United in the summer.
The Englishman has returned to the German club on a six-month loan deal from the Red Devils this January. The deal doesn’t have any buy option and he is expected to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
Kehl recently said that due to financial conditions, Dortmund are unlikely to be able to sign Sancho permanently, telling Sky Germany:
“Realistically, the chance is not that great. Manchester United paid 85 million euros for him two years ago. A purchase option was not financially feasible for us.
“We will see what happens in the summer. If the player develops as we hope, there will be other interested parties.”
Sancho spent four years at Dortmund after joining them from Manchester City’s academy back in 2017. He had great success at the club, winning two cups and contributing 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games.
This led to Sancho earning a £73 million move to Manchester United in 2021. While he joined with a lot of expectations, the Englishman failed to live up to them. He scored just 12 goals and provided six assists in 82 games for the Red Devils.
Moreover, he had a public falling out with manager Erik ten Hag in September last year. Ten Hag raised questions regarding Sancho’s training commitments after leaving him out of the squad against Arsenal. Sancho responded with a now-deleted social media post, claiming he was being scapegoated.
The winger was then banished from the first team and hasn’t played for Manchester United since. He returned to Dortmund on loan and provided an assist in his first game back as a substitute against Darmstadt.
Currently, it appears unlikely that Sancho will feature for Manchester United under Ten Hag. However, since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS buying a 25% stake in the club, Ten Hag’s future is under speculation as well. This could perhaps open up an opportunity for Sancho to redeem himself at Old Trafford.
