Why was Jack Grealish dropped from the England Euro 2024 squad?

Jack Grealish has been named among the seven players dropped by Gareth Southgate from his final squad for Euro 2024. The England manager has revealed that he has decided to pick only those who were in good form this season and not on past reputation.

The Manchester City star was key to the club’s success during the 2022/23 season but had injury issues in the season that just got over. He featured just ten times for the Premier League champions and was an unused substitute in the FA Cup final loss to Manchester United.

Southgate has stated that he spoke to all the players not making the flight to Germany and they took it respectfully. Grealish was among those who got the call today and the England manager said:

“All of the players took the news really respectfully. All top players believe they should be in – that’s the mindset they have … but other players have had stronger seasons, especially in the last six months.”

Southgate had warned Grealish that he needed to get back to full fitness soon to make it to Germany. Earlier this season, the England manager said:

“Jack (Grealish) is definitely not out of the picture. I spoke to him before I named the squad. He was he was back into training, but I didn’t think for these games he was going to be at a physical level to be able to compete.”

Apart from Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, James Maddison, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford, Curtis Jones, and Jarrell Quansah have also not made the final squad to Germany. Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford were the other high-profile names, along with Reece James and Ben Chilwell, who were injured this season, to miss out on the provisional squad earlier this summer.
