ISL Winners List: Everything You Need To Know About the Champions of Indian Super League Cup

The Indian Super League (ISL) has been the epitome of the growth of the country’s football since 2014. From the last decade’s inaugural season to the 2024-25 season, Indian football fans have witnessed five different ISL winners. In the first season of the Indian Super League, Mohun Bagan Super Giant who were called Atletico de Kolkata back then, were crowned champions. In the last 10 years, the country’s biggest football league has seen 13 teams coming from across the different regions of the country under one roof to entertain the fans with the century-old rivalries reignited in the process.

It must be noted that only the winners of the ISL Cup will be discussed here. Atletico de Kolkata (2014)

The century-old club Mohun Bagan based in Kolkata, which is also the only national club of India, marked their journey in the Indian Super League under the name of Atletico de Kolkata. In the inaugural season of the competition, they showed why they were hailed as the most organized team in the country before becoming the first ISL winners. ATK got the better of their opponents Kerala Blasters in the final to clinch a 1-0 victory under the stewardship of the Spanish manager, Antonio Lopez Habas.

Chennaiyin FC (2015)

Chennaiyin FC, who went down despite showing glimpses of promise in the first season, showed immense resilience to win the Indian Super League winners trophy by edging past FC Goa in a thrilling 3-2 victory in the final showdown of the tournament in 2015. The team from the Southern part of India came back from behind to win the ISL Cup by scoring two late goals through Stiven Mendoza in the dying minutes. 

Atletico de Kolkata (2016)

The Kolkata-based franchise once again stood tall and became the crowned ISL winners once again to become the first team to win the coveted football tournament twice in 2016. Under the management of Jose Molina, a balanced ATK team faced off against their old foes Kerala Blasters again in the final. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after the normal time, and ATK defeated Kerala 4-3 on penalties to become the champions of India.

Chennaiyin FC (2017-18)

Chennaiyin FC, after winning their first Indian Super League title in 2015, came back to make a podium finish in the 2017-18 ISL season as they handed a 3-2 loss to their regional rivals Bengaluru FC in the final. The then Chennai coach John Gregory built a youthful and experienced team that wreaked havoc in the tournament.

Bengaluru FC (2018-19)

Following a dominant performance throughout the season, Bengaluru FC claimed the ISL winners title in 2019. They missed out on the 2018 silverware after suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of Chennaiyin FC in the previous season. Off the back of strong attacking and defensive departments, Carles Cuadrat’s team clinched a 1-0 win over FC Goa to win their first ISL winners trophy.

ATK (2019-20)

The superpower of the Indian Super League, Atletico de Kolkata had to wait four years after their 2016 title winning campaign to become the ISL winners for the third time in 2020. Their former coach Antonio Lopez Habas once again led ATK to the Indian top flight glory in a comfortable 3-1 victory over Chennaiyin FC.  With this, they became the most successful club franchise in the Indian Super League history.

Mumbai City (2020-21)

Sergio Lobera-led Mumbai City FC claimed their first ISL title in 2021, thanks to a dynamic style of football that offered fans a chance to witness a play of magic and dominance. They went against the most decorated franchise of the tournament ATK Mohun Bagan in the final and snatched a fighting 2-1 victory to become the champions.

Hyderabad FC (2021-22)

Another new team to have become the ISL winners after Mumbai City by ending the dominance of the clubs like ATK and Chennaiyin FC was Hyderabad FC. They, under the guidance of Manuel Marquez, displayed their tactical brilliance and possession-based play before emerging as the champions of India. Hyderabad FC drew 1-1 against Kerala Blasters in the final before winning it 3-1 in the penalty shootout.

ATK Mohun Bagan (2022-23)

ATK Mohun Bagan, the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Super League, who was the serial winner of the tournament as ATK, once again emerged victorious by toppling Bengaluru FC in the penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in the regulation time of play in the final of the 2022-23 season. Juan Ferrando’s tactical guidance propelled them to deliver consistent performances throughout the season before becoming the ISL winners.

Mumbai City FC (2023-24)

Mumbai City FC showcased their attacking prowess and solid defensive performance to become the champions of the 2023-24 Indian Super League Cup. Under the keen watch of Des Buckingham, riding a fluid performance on the pitch, the Mumbai franchise eased past their ultimate opponents, Mohun Bagan Super Giants in a 3-1 win in the final. It was the second time, Mumbai City FC emerged as the ISL winners.
