Liverpool began their post-Jurgen Klopp era with a 2-0 win over promoted side Ipswich Town in their first match of the 2024-25 Premier League season. Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah scored apiece for the Reds in the second half as Arne Slot’s tenure began on a winning note. It was turning out to be a frustrating afternoon for the Merseyside outfit, who struggled to break down their opponents in the opening stanza. However, their persistence eventually paid off after the break and Liverpool avoided dropping points on the opening day. Here are the player ratings for both sides:

Luke Woolfenden – 7.5/10: A force of nature with his excellent vision and positional awareness; registered a game-high of eight clearances too
Jacob Greaves – 7.5/10: Perfectly complimented Woolfenden and frustrated Liverpool’s stellar forwards in the first half with a solid display
Leif Davis – 7/10: Didn’t go forward much but made up for that with a stoic defensive display

Sam Morsy – 7/10: Aggressive in duels and never held back when competing for the ball
Massimo Luongo – 6/10: Didn’t get involved much and was hooked off after the hour mark

Wes Burns – 5/10: A complete non-factor before going off with an injury
Conor Chaplin – 6/10: Kept firmly under wraps by Liverpool’s obdurate defense
Omari Hutchinson – 5/10: All sizzle no steak; completed a meager nine passes in 90 minutes of action
Liam Delap – 4/10: A toothless display from the former Manchester City player; didn’t attempt a single shot in the game

Virgil van Dijk – 7/10: The flying Dutchman had an easy game here, with Ipswich forwards barely posing any threat
Andrew Robertson – 6.5/10: Demonstrated his excellent passing range but his attacking game wasn’t the best

Ryan Gravenberch – 7/10: Offered good resistance to Ipswich’s movements and helped circulate the ball for Liverpool
Alexis Mac Allister – 6/10: His dribbling was off and he looked sloppy on the ball too; not a great start to the new season for him

Mohamed Salah – 8/10: New season, same old Salah; this was also the seventh time in eight years with Liverpool that he scored in their opening league clash! bagged the assist for Jota’s opener too
Dominik Szboszlai – 7.5/10: Displayed shades of his attacking self that made him a star at Salzburg; completed over 90% of his passes and created three chances too
Luis Diaz – 7/10: His shooting was off today but nonetheless key to creating goalscoring chances
Diego Jota – 8/10: Broke the deadlock for Liverpool with a well-taken goal
